Erdély (Transylvania) means “beyond the forest”. It had been an autonomous region in the center of what is now Romania. Over the centuries it changed hands several times between Romania and Hungary, and earlier, invading hordes of Turks and Huns and whatever other marauding tribes decide to brave the inhospitable challenge of the Carpathian Mountains. The Székelys, a fierce Hungarian tribe, have lived there for centuries, separated by geography from their Hungarian brothers.
